  • All graduates must bring the Graduation Day REGISTRATION FORM

  1. Boys: Wearing UIN Maliki Alma-mater coat;white shirt and black trousers, black tie and wearing moslem cap (Peci/Kopyah)
  2. Girls: Wearing UIN Maliki Alma-mater coat; white shirt and black skirt, and white veil.

English Language Center (ELC) gives TOEFL course every year for students on fourth semester to improve their ability of English. In order to give innovative TOEFL teaching courses for students, on December 4, 2013, ELC held workshop on Best Practice in Teaching TOEFL for all of the lecturers of ELC at rektorat building. ELC invited two experts keynote speakers of TOEFL.

Before the workshop was started, Dr. H. Langgeng Budianto, M.Pd as the head of ELC gave opening speech for the participants. The agenda was followed by the presentation of the first speaker; Dr. H. Sugeng Hariyanto, M.Pd from State Poly-technique of Malang. He shared the tips and trick of Preparing for Speaking and Writing Sections of TOEFL IBT since the test itself is very tricky and different from Paper-based TOEFL. Dr. H. Sugeng Hariyanto, M.Pd performed the test types of TOEFL IBT and gave the example as well in a fun and relaxing way.

The first skill delivered was Speaking Section which requires the test takers to deliver the ideas clearly and fluently. The test takers must possess good pronunciation, natural pace and good intonation as well. The second skill discussed was Writing Section which consists of testing and scoring criteria.

After coffee break, the workshop was continued by the presentation of TOEFL Reading Section which was delivered by Hj. Siti Rohani, M.Pd., Ph.D. In the presentation, she gave tips of what to do before and during the Reading Section test. Hj. Siti Rohani, M.Pd., Ph.D mentioned that skimming and finding the main idea are very important for answering the reading passage. After giving some tips, she asked the participants to skim the reading text then answered the question. The presentation continued to listening skill of how to take notes while listening as note taking is allowed in TOEFL IBT. Then again, the participants listened to the sample audio and asked to answer the related questions.


To close the workshop, the head of ELC, Dr. H. Langgeng Budianto, M.Pd, delivered the speech and hoped the workshop would be beneficial for all of the lecturers in teaching TOEFL in more various methods. (FH)

English Language Center (ELC) as one of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Malang pillars plays big role to enhance students’ capability to speak in English. In order to reach that goal, on Friday, 29 November 2013, the institution held a workshop on Best-Use Practices for Enhancing Learner’s Level of English Fluency Through Task-Based Autonomous Learning in the third floor of rectorat building. The speakers are the experts in their field, they are: Dr. Hj. Zuliati Rahmah, M.Pd. (UIN Sunan Ampel lecturer) and H. Junaidi Mistar, M.A, Ph.D. (Islamic University of Malang lecturer). While the participants are all ELC lecturers and many other lecturers from different university who are teaching ESP too such as lecturers from University of Muhammadiyah Malang, University of Brawijaya, and Poly-technique University of Jember.

The agenda was started by the opening ceremony which was officially opened by Dr. H. Langgeng Budianto, M.Pd. as the representative of the third vice rector who was attending another agenda. All participants were so glad and enthusiastic since they found that the titles that would be presented were really interesting. Then, Dr. Hj. Zuliati Rahmah, M.Pd. started her presentation under the title “Joyful Teaching Speaking Practices”. She started her presentation by asking some questions which contains common problems, situations, and activities which are done by all lecturers. After some responses were collected, she delivers two worksheets. The first, all lecturers were asked to reflect their teaching topic, materials, purpose, and activities they have done in class. Based on their reflection the lecturers were asked to compare to their friends or pair and they have to evaluate their teaching strategy. She was actually practices Think-Pair-Share strategy. The second, she gave “Are you someone who….” worksheet. It is another possibility to encourage students to speak a lot since students are asked to find three or five friends who have the same condition with the statements in worksheet. Other joyful teaching techniques were also trained to all participants, such as: guessing words meaning, describing photographs, and picking secret topics from glass. Those all contributed more knowledge and understanding to all lectures on how to create Joyful teaching in which focusing on student-center learning approach.

After the first presentation, all lecturers were gathered to have reflection session. One by one lecturer told his or her teaching strategies which were possible to create joyful teaching circumstances. The other might ask questions or gave suggestions to the applied strategies.

The next presentation about Autonomous Learning was raised by H. Junaidi Mistar, M.A, Ph.D. He began by telling his personal experience and struggle until he found his success to get scholarship in Australia for his Doctoral degree. The story was so inspiring and promoting the important of being autonomous is really important to reach the success in learning. In his presentation, he explained that being autonomous is really correlated to the students’ awareness. The awareness is categorized into three: Task awareness (what is done), Strategic awareness (how to to), and Achievement awareness (what is the goal). Another important think he remind that as lecturers, the participants must conduct research which one of them is experimental research design. Lectures may test two different strategies (strategic strategy and conventional strategy) to two different classes (one as an experimental group and other as the control group). Then, based on the SPSS test, the researcher can find whether the strategic strategy give significance influence to the students learning achievement or not.
