English Language Center held Workshop on Writing ESP Book on September 4-6, 2013 in the meeting room, third floor of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang Rectorat building. The agenda was attended by all ESP lecturers from ELC (English Language Center) and some English subject lecturers from various universities in Indonesia such as from University of Muhammadiyah Malang, University of Palangkaraya, University of Jember, STKIP Blitar, and many more.  This workshop was aimed to support the ELC lecturers program that is developing ESP book materials and trying out them into students with the assistance from the experts. Furthermore, in the end of the agenda, hopefully the lectures had their ESP book with development and better quality which in line with the vision and mission of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.

On September 4, 2013, the agenda was opened by Dr. H. M. Zainuddin, MA, and Dr. H. Langgeng Budianto, M.Pd. continued by the first theme of the workshop was “Selecting Appropriate Material for ESP Course book” guided by Prof. Hj. Kasihani K.E. Suyanto, MA., Ph.D. Here the Professor had reminded all lecturers to remember that English in Indonesia is as EFL or ESL since this will differentiate the materials and teaching strategies which will be applied in the book.

On September 5, 2013, the second theme was raised by Dr. Sri Rachmajanti, Dipl. TESL, M.Pd. that is “Developing Learning Tasks/Activities Based on the Available Materials”. At that time Miss Loeky (a familiar call for her) guided all lecturers to observe and discuss on the example of chapter book published by Oxford press based on the elements of good criteria of ESP book for students. The discussion was interesting and all participants realized that the sample chapter given by Miss Loeky can be the example of good ESP course book chapter.

On September 6, 2013, the last theme for the workshop was presented by Prof. H. Mohammad Adnan Latief, MA., Ph.D. about “Evaluating ESP Course-Book”. At that time, he emphasized the procedures of writing a book which consists of four steps: writing a book, expert validation, trying out it, revision, and ready used book. At those points, he was glad that all ESP lecturers in ELC had done three levels up to trying out and he was glad to know that after the workshop all books would be revised. So, at the end of the month, possibly all revised ESP books would be ready for teaching. After all the lecturers had known well how to write ESP course book well, then Dr. H. Langgeng Budianto, M.Pd. asked lecturers to present their book in order to get suggestions, revision, and comments. The first presentation was ESP course book for Law which was presented by Afif Ikhwanul M., SS. and team. Finally, all the participants were very happy and felt satisfactory on the importance of the workshop. (AIM)
